Jio crosses 50 crore users, leads subscriber growth as BSNL stays ahead of Airtel: TRAI

New Delhi: Reliance Jio continued to dominate India’s telecom market in September 2025, adding 32.49 lakh new mobile subscribers and 2.12 lakh wireline customers, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The additions pushed Jio’s total subscriber base to over 50.64 crore, marking the first time any operator in India has crossed the 50-crore mark.

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) maintained its lead over Bharti Airtel in mobile subscriber additions during the same month. BSNL gained 5.24 lakh new mobile users, while Airtel added 4.37 lakh, the TRAI report noted. The country’s total active wireless subscriber base stood at 108.85 crore in September 2025.

Vodafone Idea (Vi), MTNL, and Reliance Communications continued to lose customers. Vi lost 7.44 lakh mobile subscribers, MTNL shed 56,928, and Reliance Communications lost 13.

In the wireline segment, Bharti Airtel followed Jio by adding 97,383 new users, while Reliance Communications gained 6,456. Tata Teleservices recorded the steepest decline, losing 1.63 lakh wireline customers. MTNL also saw a fall of 32,930 subscribers, followed by APSFL (19,049), Quadrant (1,733), BSNL (3,110), and Vi (3,125).

India’s overall telecom subscriber base grew marginally to 122.89 crore in September 2025. Of this, the wireless segment accounted for 118.23 crore subscribers, while wireline services had 4.66 crore customers. The broadband subscriber base reached 99.56 crore, reflecting a growth of about 0.5 percent.

Reliance Jio continued to lead the broadband market with 50.54 crore subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel with 31 crore, Vi with 12.77 crore, BSNL with 3.47 crore, and Atria Convergence with 23.4 lakh. The top five broadband providers together held 98.5 percent of India’s total broadband market share in September, according to TRAI.
