Lupin and Honeywell join hands to green-light eco-friendly inhalers

Mumbai: In a move poised to reshape the future of respiratory care, Lupin Limited has announced plans to integrate Honeywell’s Solstice® Air propellant into its range of inhalers. With this step, Lupin is set to become the first Indian pharmaceutical company to fully scale the use of this next-generation, near-zero global warming potential (GWP) technology in pressurised metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs).

Solstice Air, known scientifically as HFO-1234ze(E) cGMP, offers a high-performance, non-flammable alternative to hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)-based propellants that are currently used in most inhalers. According to Honeywell, it can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 99.9%, offering a more sustainable option for treating conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

“Lupin’s partnership with Honeywell underscores our commitment to delivering high-quality medicines while working towards a healthier, more sustainable future for our patients and communities worldwide. By integrating Solstice Air in our products, we are not only enhancing patient care, but we are also significantly reducing environmental impact,” said Vinita Gupta, CEO Lupin.

Lupin’s focus on sustainability in respiratory therapy aligns with increasing global efforts to cut medical-related emissions, particularly from propellant-based delivery systems.

“Solstice Air can play a critical role in ensuring that Lupin’s respiratory inhalers provide safe and effective treatment options that also leverage the latest advancements in technology to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions,” said Ashish Modi, President, Honeywell India. “By continuing to research and develop advanced technologies for reducing carbon, Honeywell is dedicated to driving innovation that enhances the efficacy of health solutions while pioneering emissions reducing practices that support industry advancements.”

The proposed collaboration is currently subject to the negotiation and signing of definitive agreements between the two companies.

Honeywell, which operates across sectors including aerospace, automation, and energy transition, brings its global experience in sustainability-driven innovation to this partnership, aiming to support both environmental goals and next-gen healthcare solutions.
