New Delhi: BEML Limited (formerly Bharat Earth Movers Limited), a leading Indian defence equipment manufacturer, has entered into a contract to design and supply 20 Datran 1500hp engines for India's Main Battle Tanks (MBTs). This development is expected to significantly boost the operational strength of the Indian Armed Forces, particularly in armoured warfare scenarios.
The Datran 1500hp engine has been built to rival the world’s best military propulsion systems, offering superior power, advanced technology, and enhanced manoeuvrability. These features are essential for MBTs engaged in fast-changing combat conditions. Before mass production, the engines will undergo stringent testing on older Arjun tank prototypes to ensure their effectiveness. The engine is also planned for future integration into the Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) program, marking its role in India’s ongoing military modernisation.
Designed for high reliability, the Datran engine is engineered to perform under extreme conditions, including altitudes up to 5000 metres and temperatures ranging from -40°C to +55°C. The project, which started in 2020, is set to be completed by mid-2025, positioning it as a key step forward in enhancing India’s defence capabilities. During a test event at BEML's Mysuru facility, Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane praised the progress, noting its significance for the country’s move towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
