New Delhi: Bhupender Gupta has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited at the company’s corporate office in Faridabad. He also continues to hold the additional responsibility of CMD of SJVN Limited. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited.
Gupta, a graduate in electrical engineering with an MBA in operations management, began his professional journey with ACC Ltd in 1991 before joining SJVN in 1995. During his 12-year tenure at SJVN, he played a central role in the planning, commissioning, and operations of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant, India’s largest operational hydropower project. He also worked in Bhutan from 2002 to 2005 with the 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Power Project.
In 2007, Gupta moved to REC Ltd, where he spent six years in project financing of hydro and thermal projects and later headed subsidiaries REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd., overseeing national-level power sector schemes including Saubhagya, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, and PMDP.
His international experience deepened in 2020 when he joined the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan as Director (Technical), steering construction progress and resolving long-pending contractual issues. In 2023, Gupta became Director (Technical) at THDCIL, where he guided the successful commissioning of Unit-1 (660 MW) of the Khurja Super Thermal Power Project and Units 1 and 2 (250 MW each) of Tehri Pumped Storage Plant.
With over 34 years of experience, including 31 years in power CPSUs, Gupta has worked extensively across hydro, thermal, renewable energy, transmission, and distribution sectors. His expertise spans planning, design, execution, project management, and O&M of large-scale infrastructure projects.
Looking ahead, Gupta has outlined his vision to expand India’s non-fossil fuel capacity while enhancing energy security. His priorities include the integration of artificial intelligence, green hydrogen, bioenergy, energy storage, EV-grid integration, and stronger safeguards for cybersecurity and digital protection.
Outside of work, Gupta is passionate about sports and actively plays badminton and table tennis, having represented his organisations in several inter-CPSU tournaments.
