New Delhi: Delhi Metro has achieved a remarkable feat, breaking its previous record for passenger journeys 17 times within just one month, from 12 August to 12 September 2024. The Metro’s earlier highest journey record was set on 13 February 2024, with 7.1 million journeys on a single day. However, over the past month, that milestone has been repeatedly surpassed, with 19 of the top 20 highest passenger journey records being set this year alone. Only two of these top records belong to February 2024, further highlighting the rapid increase in ridership recently.
In the last four days, from 9 to 12 September 2024, the Metro network has seen unprecedented levels of passenger traffic, with these dates now ranking among the top five busiest days in its history. The highest-ever daily record of 7.7 million journeys was made on 20 August 2024, while passenger journeys on 9, 10, 11, and 12 September were also remarkably high, consistently exceeding 7.3 million each day. This significant surge in passengers underscores Delhi Metro’s increasing popularity as the most reliable, efficient, and convenient mode of transport, especially during Delhi’s humid and rainy spells. With frequent road blockages and traffic delays due to heavy rains, commuters have turned to the Metro for punctual and smooth travel, ensuring they reach their destinations on time.
In response to the growing demand, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced plans to run additional trains across all lines, with 84 extra trips scheduled on 13 and 14 September 2024. If ridership continues to rise, this measure will be extended to upcoming weekdays as well. These steps reinforce the Metro’s position as the backbone of public transport in Delhi-NCR, offering a dependable and comfortable alternative to road travel.
The extensive interconnectivity of the Metro network, which includes 29 interchange stations, has made commuting across Delhi-NCR seamless and efficient. Passengers can easily reach any part of the region, further boosting the Metro’s appeal. To enhance the convenience of ticket booking, DMRC has introduced several digital platforms, including the DMRC Saarthi App, One Delhi App, WhatsApp, Paytm, and Amazon Pay. Commuters are encouraged to use these channels to purchase tickets before arriving at the stations, reducing the need to queue at ticket counters and speeding up their journey. /BI
