New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) marked a milestone on December 25, 2024 as it celebrated 22 years of passenger operations, commemorating the historic launch of its first train, TS-01. On this day in 2002, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee flagged off TS-01, heralding a new era of modern public transport in Delhi-NCR.
TS-01, the pioneer train that kickstarted DMRC’s journey, has become a symbol of reliability and efficiency. Originally commissioned as a 4-coach train, it has evolved over time to meet the growing needs of commuters. Upgraded to six coaches in 2014 and eight coaches in 2023, the train has achieved remarkable operational milestones. Over its 22 years of service, TS-01 has traveled approximately 27 lakh kilometers, ferried over 5.4 crore passengers, and completed an impressive 23 lakh door operations.
Manufactured by the MRM Consortium in South Korea, TS-01’s journey to Delhi was a feat in itself, involving transportation by sea to Kolkata and further via Indian Railways. The train’s cutting-edge propulsion system has ensured not only smooth operations but also environmental sustainability, regenerating nearly 40% of the power it consumes through regenerative braking.
DMRC’s maintenance teams have played a critical role in TS-01’s continued success, conducting two major overhauls to keep the train in top condition. As a result, TS-01 has maintained an exceptional Mean Distance Between Failures (MDBF) of 84,000 kilometers, more than doubling the contractual benchmark of 40,000 kilometers.
The train recently underwent a mid-life refurbishment to align with modern passenger standards. Key upgrades include real-time route maps, safety videos, CCTV surveillance, emergency alarms, and mobile and laptop charging outlets. The refurbishment also enhanced safety with a new fire detection system and improved passenger experience with fresh interiors and exteriors.
To mark the occasion, TS-01 operated on the Red Line, adorned with flowers and a commemorative banner. Reflecting on the train’s enduring legacy, DMRC officials hailed TS-01 as the "first among equals" in its fleet of over 350 train sets.
The 22nd anniversary celebration comes on the heels of a record-breaking year for DMRC, which saw its highest-ever single-day passenger journeys—78.67 lakh on November 18, 2024. With ongoing Phase-IV expansions, advancements in digital ticketing, and technological upgrades, DMRC is poised to further transform urban transportation and enhance the quality of life for Delhi-NCR residents.
As TS-01 continues to serve passengers with renewed vigor, it stands as a testament to DMRC’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in public transport.
