IndianOil to build India’s largest green hydrogen plant in Panipat by 2027

Panipat: IndianOil will set up a green hydrogen generation facility at its Panipat Refinery & Petrochemical Complex, with a production capacity of 10,000 tonnes per annum. Slated for commissioning by December 2027, the plant will be the biggest of its kind in India and marks IndianOil’s formal entry into the green hydrogen sector.

The hydrogen produced will replace the fossil-derived hydrogen currently used in refinery operations, leading to a significant reduction in carbon emissions. The initiative is a key part of IndianOil’s decarbonisation strategy and supports the National Green Hydrogen Mission launched by the Government of India.

In a statement issued on Friday, the company noted, “Slated for commissioning by December 2027, the Green Hydrogen produced will replace fossil-derived Hydrogen in refinery operations, resulting in substantial reduction in Carbon emissions.”

Earlier this year, during the World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos, IndianOil Chairman Arvinder Singh Sahney said in an interview with ANI, “Green hydrogen plant is now alive. We have got very good bids for it. And now the tenders are under evaluation. And within a month or so, we will be able to award the job, and within two years, that green hydrogen, the 10,000 tons per annum plant at Panipat (Haryana) will be commissioned.”

The project is being viewed as a major step in IndianOil’s transition to cleaner energy solutions and its commitment to the net zero target.
