New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced plans to implement GIS-based software to monitor and manage traffic at approximately 100 toll plazas. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of national highway traffic flow, according to a statement issued on September 2, 2024.
The selected toll plazas were identified through congestion data collected from the 1,033 national highway helpline. The new system will provide real-time monitoring, offering congestion alerts and lane distribution recommendations when vehicle queues exceed specified limits.
The GIS-based software will be gradually extended to additional toll plazas. It will offer detailed information including the name and location of the toll plaza, live queue lengths in metres, total waiting times, and vehicle speeds. The system will also send alerts for congestion and suggest lane adjustments if necessary.
Furthermore, the software will provide updates on current weather conditions and local festivals, helping NHAI officials manage traffic more effectively and reduce congestion at toll plazas. /BI
