RailTel bags a Rs 66.83 crore order from NFR for a tunnel communication project

New Delhi: RailTel, a Mini Ratna CPSE under the Ministry of Railways, has recently secured a significant order amounting to Rs. 66.83 Crores. This order is earmarked for the supply, installation, testing & commissioning of an integrated tunnel communication system, emergency call arrangements in tunnels, and an Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS) at Stations. The focus area for this transformative project is the Bhairabi-Sairang new single line section within the Lumding Division of North Frontier Railway, according to an official statement.

One of the primary challenges faced in railway tunnel infrastructure is the interruption of communication due to poor signal coverage. This impediment can significantly impact both train operation and maintenance activities. To overcome this hurdle, RailTel's state-of-the-art Integrated Tunnel Communication System has been designed to provide uninterrupted radio communication. It facilitates seamless connectivity between handheld radios inside tunnels, the base station at tunnel control rooms, and station masters at adjacent stations.

Handheld devices are strategically allocated to personnel involved in construction, maintenance, and train operations. The communication channels within the tunnel operate independently, simultaneously, and without any risk of failure. The successful implementation of this system is paramount for ensuring the safety and efficiency of train operations within the challenging terrain of Indian Railway tunnels.

The Bhairabi-Sairang new line project poses unique challenges, including road approach issues, non-availability of materials, higher transportation costs, and tough terrain. Despite these obstacles, RailTel is committed to executing this challenging work efficiently.

The project encompasses the provision of supply and installation of IT Data Networking Infrastructure, PA & Emergency/SOS Call Points system, and an IP-based CCTV Surveillance System. Additionally, the scope of work includes the design, supply, installation, wiring, testing, and commissioning of an Integrated Communication System VHF (Simplex) and Backbone Network for smart facilities & Emergency communication system.

RailTel's dedication to tunnel communication projects is not limited to the Bhairabi-Sairang section. The company is concurrently implementing similar projects for the Katra-Banihal section of Northern Railway, Panvel-Karjat, Karjat-Lonawala, and Kasara-Igatpuri section of Central Railway, and Castle Rock-Kulem section (Braganza Ghat) of South Western Railway.

In essence, RailTel's innovative solutions are not only addressing the immediate communication challenges within tunnels but are also contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of railway operations. These advancements mark a significant step forward in modernizing railway infrastructure in the challenging terrains of India, ensuring the seamless flow of communication for the smooth operation of trains. /BI/
