New Delhi: Uttarakhand has added two more automated driving test tracks (ADTTs) to its network, with new facilities in Haridwar and Rishikesh inaugurated by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Developed by Maruti Suzuki India Limited under its CSR initiative, these centres aim to ensure more accurate and transparent assessment of driving skills.

The ADTTs are equipped with high-definition cameras and fully integrated IT systems, offering a 100% computerised process in line with Central Motor Vehicle Rules. Designed to eliminate human interference, the tracks assess driving skills of applicants for light motor vehicles and two-wheelers.

This takes the state’s total count of automated tracks to three, including the Dehradun facility that has been operational since 2019. The Dehradun centre had previously earned recognition from the state for good governance and excellence in public service.

Speaking at the launch, Brijesh Kumar Sant, Secretary, Transport Department, Government of Uttarakhand, said, “We are committed to making the roads of Uttarakhand safer, and Maruti Suzuki’s ADTTs are a key enabler. Our collaboration with Maruti Suzuki dates back to 2009 with the establishment of the Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR) in Dehradun. Through these automated test tracks, we can ensure that only truly competent drivers are granted licenses.”

He also noted that the state is working with Maruti Suzuki to deliver refresher training to commercial drivers ahead of the Char Dham Yatra. This programme helps drivers tackle difficult terrains and qualify for the Green Card needed for the yatra.

Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, added, “Under the visionary leadership of CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttarakhand is rapidly developing. Skilled drivers are critical to boosting tourism and ensuring road safety. Our ADTTs will help achieve these goals by ensuring that licenses are issued only to capable and well-prepared drivers.”

He said Maruti Suzuki plans to train around 11,000 commercial drivers this year through its IDTR facilities.

The automated evaluation process, while more rigorous, is showing signs of improving driving standards. The pass rate at Dehradun’s track, which initially fell to 60% in 2019–20, has now climbed to 69%, indicating that applicants are better prepared to meet the requirements.
