Palakkad, Kerala: Early childhood education plays an important role in shaping how children learn, interact and develop confidence. The Varnakoodaram initiative in Kollengode Block is bringing this understanding into the design of a pre-primary school.
The initiative, developed under NITI Aayog’s Aspirational Blocks Programme, has created a child-friendly learning environment based on inputs from paediatricians, child psychologists and educators. The school follows a unique 13-zone concept, with different spaces designed to encourage children to learn through exploration and activity.
The Science & Nature Zone features an aquarium and Moonlight Simulation, introducing children to nature and science through visual and sensory experiences. A child-sized ‘Kid House’ gives children a familiar space to play and learn, while an expandable stage encourages them to participate in performances and activities, helping build confidence and overcome hesitation. Water is also part of the learning environment. An artificial rain system allows children to experience water-related concepts, while a suspension bridge inspired by Malampuzha Dam adds an element of play and local context.
Sustainability in everyday learning
The school has also incorporated a smart water-recycling system, with recycled water being used to irrigate the garden. This brings environmental awareness into the daily school experience rather than limiting it to classroom lessons.
The design also responds to the emotional needs of young children entering school. Spaces that encourage play, familiarity and interaction can help reduce separation anxiety and make the transition into school more comfortable.
By combining child-friendly design, experiential learning and sustainable infrastructure, Varnakoodaram is creating an environment that supports cognitive, sensory and environmental development alongside self-confidence.
The initiative offers a practical example of how innovation at the local level can make early education more engaging and put the child at the centre of the learning experience.
