New Delhi: Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot from Mumbai, is receiving international praise after his actions during a mid-air cockpit altercation helped avert a potentially catastrophic incident aboard a flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
Flight FZ1073, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8, was carrying 174 passengers when a violent confrontation reportedly broke out between the two pilots on September 30. According to accounts cited by Israeli authorities and international media, the co-pilot allegedly stabbed Machchhar and attempted to take control of the aircraft. The plane subsequently went into a steep descent before the situation was brought under control. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority has confirmed that the flight experienced a security incident and was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The authority has said that an investigation into the circumstances is underway.
Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar reportedly managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and help restrain the attacker. Two off-duty pilots who were travelling on the aircraft also helped regain control of the flight. The aircraft was subsequently landed safely at Tabuk, and all passengers were accounted for. The injured captain was taken to hospital and has been reported to be in stable condition.
The incident has triggered widespread recognition of Machchhar's actions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him a "HERO", saying that despite being seriously injured, the captain displayed immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect others. Modi said his valour helped save hundreds of lives and avert a great tragedy, adding that "India is proud" of him.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also paid tribute to Machchhar, describing his actions as extraordinary bravery and saying that opening the cockpit door enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker and prevent what he called a catastrophic mid-air disaster.
US President Donald Trump also praised Machchhar's actions, according to reports, while Israeli passengers and members of the public have shared messages of gratitude and admiration. International media have highlighted not only Machchhar but also the passengers, crew and off-duty pilots who intervened during the crisis.
The full circumstances—including the motive behind the cockpit attack—remain under investigation. flydubai and the UAE aviation authorities have urged against speculation until the official inquiry establishes the facts.
For now, Captain Smit Machchhar's story stands out not merely because of the danger he faced, but because of the professional instinct that prevailed in the most difficult circumstances: protect the aircraft, protect the passengers and get everyone safely home.
