Ahmedabad secures 2030 Commonwealth Games as India eyes bigger global sporting roles

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad has officially been chosen to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games after delegates from 74 nations approved the decision at the General Assembly in Glasgow, United Kingdom. This will be the second time India stages the event, with New Delhi having hosted it in 2010. The development is also seen as strengthening India’s long-term ambition to bid for the 2036 Olympic Games.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the award of hosting rights is a prestigious moment for the country as it works towards becoming a sporting powerhouse by 2047. President of Commonwealth Sport Dr Donald Rukare noted that “India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance.”

Ahmedabad has spent the past decade upgrading its sports infrastructure and is already positioning itself as a contender for future Olympic hosting rights. The city’s proposal builds on the momentum of Glasgow 2026 while showcasing India’s cultural depth and competitive sporting landscape.

Commonwealth Sport said the 2030 edition is expected to feature between 15 and 17 sports, with the final programme to be confirmed next year. The Games aim to bring together athletes and communities while marking a century of Commonwealth sporting tradition.
