Delhi Metro invites bids to source 500 million units of renewable energy

New Delhi: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited bids for the supply of 500 Million Units (MUs) of renewable energy annually, marking a significant step towards cleaner and greener operations.

Currently, DMRC sources around 350 MUs annually from Rewa Solar Park and generates 40 MUs through rooftop solar installations across stations, depots, and staff colonies, achieving a renewable energy share of approximately 33 percent of total power usage and nearly 65 percent during daytime operations.

The bid aims to select a Solar Power Developer to set up a grid-connected captive generating plant with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) anywhere in India, to supply 500 MUs annually to DMRC in Delhi and the National Capital Region. The project, to be completed within 15 months of award, will operate under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement.

With this initiative, DMRC plans to raise the share of renewable energy in its power portfolio from the current 33 percent to over 60 percent, including its Phase-IV network expansion. This move will make Delhi Metro the first metro project in India to achieve more than 60 percent renewable energy usage, supporting the country’s low-carbon transition.

The project aligns with the Government of India’s “Panchamrit” strategy announced at COP 26, aiming to accelerate climate action and strengthen sustainable energy adoption across sectors.
