Lucknow: The CBI has busted a SIM box-based cyber fraud racket by conducting coordinated searches at six locations across Meerut and Noida and arresting two accused.

Those arrested were Mohd Vilal and Mohd Dilshad, both directors of a company allegedly created to facilitate large-scale cyber fraud through misuse of telecom infrastructure.

The case centres on the illegal deployment of bulk SIM cards using SIM box technology, a method that allows routing of international or internet-based calls through local numbers, thereby masking the origin and enabling fraudsters to operate anonymously.

Investigations revealed that the accused incorporated a company in Jan 2025 and procured 108 SIM cards in its name under the pretext of employee usage. However, these numbers were later flagged on the National Cyber Reporting Portal and Chakshu portal following complaints.

Victims reported receiving calls from these numbers in which fraudsters impersonated law enforcement officials and govt authorities, coercing them into transferring money.
