New Delhi: Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has appointed Amitabh Kant, former G20 Sherpa and CEO of NITI Aayog, as a non-executive, independent director for a term of five years. The appointment, effective from October 29, 2025, is subject to the approval of the company’s shareholders, L&T said in a regulatory filing to the BSE.

“The board of directors of the company at its meeting held today, i.e., October 29, 2025, have approved the… appointment of Amitabh Kant as a non-executive, Independent Director (Additional Director) of the company for a term of 5 years with effect from October 29, 2025, up to and including October 28, 2030, subject to approval of shareholders of the company,” the company said in its filing.

Kant’s appointment adds to a growing list of corporate roles he has taken up since retiring from government service. In recent months, he has joined the boards of HCL Technologies and IndiGo as an independent director. He has also been appointed senior advisor to Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd, the Canadian investment firm led by billionaire Prem Watsa.

A retired 1980-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, Kant served in key policy roles for over four decades, including as India’s G20 Sherpa during the country’s presidency in 2023–24. He stepped down from the role in June this year, concluding 45 years of public service.

In a LinkedIn post titled ‘My New Journey’, Kant wrote, “After 45 years of dedicated government service, I have made the decision to embrace new opportunities and move forward in life. I am incredibly thankful to the Prime Minister of India for accepting my resignation as G20 Sherpa and for having given me the opportunity to drive a range of developmental initiatives and contribute to the growth, development, and progress of India.”

With his experience across governance, industry, and global policy, Kant’s association with L&T marks his continued engagement in shaping India’s developmental and corporate landscape.
