Chandigarh: The Border Security Force (BSF) is renaming border outposts along the zero line in honour of its personnel who laid down their lives during the India-Pakistan wars and various insurgency operations. The announcement was made by BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chaudhary during the Raja Mohttam Day celebrations, 38 km from Ferozepur, Punjab along the Indo-Pak border.
Speaking to the media at Hussainiwala, Chaudhary said the initiative aims to pay tribute to the martyrs and keep their legacy alive. Seven border outposts have already been renamed, with the process set to continue across the Punjab Frontier. The renamed outposts include Channan (previously Chaura FWD-II), Karnail (Sheela), Gurnam (Karma), Dalbir (Fwd Kakkar), Hardev (New Sundargarh), Hardeep (T-Bund), and Prahlad (MP Fwd).
During his visit, Chaudhary paid floral tributes to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and BK Dutt at the National Martyrs Memorial in Hussainiwala. He also expressed his appreciation for the retreat ceremony held at the Hussainiwala Joint Check Post, describing it as a symbol of national pride, and emphasised plans to promote it further as a tourist attraction.
Inaugurating the newly constructed accommodation for women personnel at the Raja Mohttam border outpost, Chaudhary commended the courage and dedication of the Mahila Prahari who have voluntarily joined the BSF. He highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure for women personnel across various border outposts to ensure they have the facilities needed to perform their duties effectively.
Family members of martyrs were honoured during the event, with Chaudhary assuring them of the BSF’s unwavering support. A documentary titled Raja Mohttam: The Untold Saga of BSF Bravery was also unveiled, recounting the valour and sacrifices of BSF personnel.
The celebrations included an address by retired sub-inspector Raghuvir Singh, a veteran of the 1971 India-Pakistan war. He shared his wartime experiences with BSF personnel and youth from nearby villages who were invited to participate in the event.
Raja Mohttam Day commemorates the bravery displayed during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, when Assistant Commandant Ram Kishan Wadhwa and his team led a daring mission through heavily mined areas under enemy fire to reclaim the strategically significant Raja Mohttam border outpost. Despite facing intense bombardment from Pakistani forces, Wadhwa and eight BSF personnel sacrificed their lives on December 11, 1971, while defending the post.
