New Delhi: BSNL has launched a nationwide network-side anti-spam and anti-smishing system for its mobile customers, designed to block malicious links in SMS before they reach users’ devices. The service requires no app installation or settings change, and ensures that legitimate OTPs, banking alerts, and government messages continue to be delivered under TRAI’s DLT/UCC framework.
The system, built in partnership with India-based cloud communications platform Tanla, was first previewed at the India Mobile Congress 2024 and is now being rolled out across BSNL circles. It uses AI, machine learning, natural language processing, reputation intelligence, and link expansion to score and filter messages in real time, working alongside the blockchain-based DLT stack adopted by Indian telecom operators to curb unsolicited commercial communication.
According to BSNL, the technology has shown over 99 percent efficacy against smishing and is capable of detecting more than 1.5 million scams daily, identifying 35,000 unique fraudulent links and 60,000 scam WhatsApp and mobile numbers each month. The protection is enabled by default for all BSNL mobile subscribers in live circles.
“Safe, secure, and always connected,” BSNL said in its announcement.
