New Delhi: The Prime Minister’s Office will now be known as Seva Tirth, with Raj Bhavan and Raj Niwas across states being renamed as Lok Bhavan and Lok Niwas. Home minister Amit Shah described the decision as an important step in the country’s journey towards becoming a developed India.
In a message on X, Shah said that for the past 11 years the Modi government has been associated not with power but with service, where the head of government sees himself as the Pradhan Sevak and works for people round the clock. He stated, “In this direction, Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji has reiterated the resolve for service and named the Prime Minister’s Office ‘Seva Tirth’. At the same time, Raj Bhavan and Raj Niwas are being renamed as Lok Bhavan and Lok Niwas”.
He called the move an important milestone in the “golden journey” of building a developed and excellent India by placing service and good governance above all.
The new PMO complex, earlier known as the Executive Enclave under the Central Vista Redevelopment project, is in its final stages of completion. Apart from the PMO, it will house the Cabinet Secretariat, the National Security Council Secretariat and India House, which will host interactions with visiting dignitaries.
The decision to rename Raj Bhavans as Lok Bhavans is being viewed as part of a broader shift within government, signalling a move from the idea of authority to a focus on responsibility and public service. Sources quoted by ANI said India’s institutions are witnessing a cultural and moral shift where governance is moving from “satta to seva and from authority to responsibility”. They added that the change in names reflects a change in mindset rather than a simple administrative update.
The Central Secretariat has also been named Kartavya Bhavan, designed around the idea that public service is a duty. The Seva Tirth complex is described as a workplace shaped around the spirit of service and the framing of national priorities.
