New Delhi: India's renewable energy sector achieved a significant milestone in 2024, with installed capacity increasing by 15.84% to 209.44 GW by December, up from 180.80 GW a year ago, according to an official statement by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE).

The total capacity added during the year more than doubled to 28.64 GW compared to 13.05 GW added in 2023, marking a record expansion in the country’s clean energy portfolio.

Solar power led the charge, contributing 24.54 GW of the total capacity added in 2024. This pushed the cumulative installed solar capacity to 97.86 GW, reflecting a remarkable 33.47% year-on-year increase.

Wind energy also made steady progress, with 3.42 GW of new capacity added in 2024. This brought the total wind power capacity to 48.16 GW, up by 7.64% compared to 2023.

In the bioenergy sector, installed capacity rose from 10.84 GW in December 2023 to 11.35 GW in December 2024. Small hydropower projects also recorded modest growth, with installed capacity increasing from 4.99 GW to 5.10 GW during the same period.

The MNRE, under Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, has been implementing key initiatives to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy. These efforts are in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
