New Delhi: The Indian Armed Forces conducted Operation Sindoor, striking nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK) at 1:44 AM IST, the Ministry of Defence confirmed. The operation was a direct response to the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack that killed 25 Indian civilians and one Nepali national.
The name Sindoor carries cultural and symbolic weight, often associated with auspiciousness and strength.
The ministry stated the strikes targeted facilities used for planning and directing cross-border terrorist attacks against India, including four Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) sites, three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) sites, and two Hizbul Mujahideen locations. Key targets included the JeM headquarters in Bahawalpur and the LeT base in Muridke, both in Pakistan’s Punjab province. The operation involved the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, utilizing precision strike weapons, including loitering munitions, launched from Indian soil. The ministry emphasized that no Pakistani military facilities were targeted, describing the action as focused, measured, and non-escalatory. India demonstrated restraint in target selection and execution, the statement added.

Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations confirmed strikes on Bahawalpur, Kotli, and Muzaffarabad, launched from Indian airspace, and vowed to respond at a time and place of its choosing. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called the strikes an act of war. In response, Pakistani forces engaged in artillery shelling and firing across the Line of Control and International Border in Jammu and Kashmir on May 6-7, 2025, killing three Indian civilians, the Indian Army reported. India responded proportionately. All educational institutions in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch were closed on May 7, 2025, and Srinagar airport halted civil flights due to the situation. A nationwide civil defence mock drill across 244 districts was conducted on the same day, as planned by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
