New Delhi: India observed Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas, on November 26, 2024, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. The day pays tribute to the framers of the Constitution and celebrates the core values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity enshrined in the document.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm wishes on this historic occasion, sharing a video on social media platform X. "Happy Constitution Day to all countrymen on the auspicious occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution," he posted, highlighting the Constitution's role in fostering national unity and integrity.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the strength of India's democracy rooted in its Constitution. He urged citizens to internalize the Constitution’s ideals and pledged to build a strong, prosperous, and self-reliant India. "The Constitution is not just a book to be displayed but the foundation of our public life," Shah remarked.
President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi addressed a joint session of Parliament in the historic Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan. The session marked the launch of year-long celebrations to honor this milestone. President Murmu reaffirmed the enduring relevance of the Constitution in guiding the nation’s democratic principles.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also extended his greetings, emphasizing that initiatives like Panchteerth and reforms such as the abrogation of Article 370 align with the vision of "One Nation, One Constitution." He lauded the Constitution as the world’s longest-written charter that binds India’s rich diversity into a cohesive and dynamic nation.
Adopted on November 26, 1949, and implemented on January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution is the bedrock of the country's democratic governance. This year’s celebrations, marked by a joint parliamentary sitting, reflect on the Constitution’s pivotal role in shaping modern India and its continued importance in national progress.
Year-long festivities, planned by the government, aim to deepen public engagement with constitutional ideals and honor the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution.
