New Delhi: Indian Railways has been pivotal in shaping India's sports ecosystem through its extensive support, with over 9,000 athletes across 29 disciplines. The Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), which began promoting sports in 1928, now plays a vital role in promoting various sports in the country. Initially focusing on hockey, athletics, and tennis, RSPB has expanded its scope and currently supports 29 game disciplines, including 18 individual games and 11 team sports. It is affiliated with 28 national sports federations and is a member of the USIC (World Railways Sports Association).
Through this support, Indian Railways ensures job security for athletes, with over 9,000 sportspeople on its rolls. Of these, around 3,000 are active competitors, and their performances in prestigious international events have been remarkable. Indian Railways has a long history of fostering excellence in sports, helping athletes reach their full potential.
In recognition of their outstanding performances, five athletes from Indian Railways have been awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award for 2024. This is a proud moment for the organisation, as it continues to contribute to India's sporting success. The five awardees are Ms. Jyothi Yarraji (Athletics - 100m hurdles, South Central Railway), Ms. Annu Rani (Athletics - Javelin Throw, Public Relations West), Ms. Salima Tete (Hockey, South Eastern Railway), Mr. Swapnil Suresh Kusale (Shooting - 50m 3P, Central Railway), and Mr. Aman (Wrestling - 57kg Freestyle, Northern Railway).
With these five new additions, Indian Railways boasts 183 Arjuna Awardees, 28 Padma Shris, 12 Dhyan Chand Awards, 13 Dronacharya Awards, and 9 Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Awardees—the largest number of such awardees from any single organisation in India. The awardees will receive their honours from the President of India at a special ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 17th January 2025.
Indian Railways congratulates these athletes and looks forward to their continued success, wishing them a bright future in their respective fields.
