Lachit Borphukan’s ‘nation first’ legacy inspires youth in nation building: Sarbananda Sonowal

New Delhi: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal paid tribute to the legendary Ahom military commander Lachit Borphukan on his 402nd birth anniversary on November 24, 2024. The minister emphasised how Borphukan’s military genius, which successfully thwarted the Mughal invasion of Assam, continues to resonate as an inspiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolve to safeguard India’s sovereignty and defend its honour at all costs.

Speaking at the event, Sonowal highlighted Borphukan’s extraordinary bravery, leadership, and strategic brilliance during the historic Battle of Saraighat, where he led the Assamese forces to victory against the formidable Mughal army. Sonowal remarked that Borphukan’s devotion to his homeland serves as a guiding light for the youth of India, encouraging them to prioritise self-reliance, courage, and dedication to the country. The minister called for a collective effort to build a strong, prosperous, and self-reliant nation, drawing from the enduring legacy of Borphukan’s patriotism.

Sonowal noted that the Battle of Saraighat was a turning point, demonstrating the strategic importance of waterways. Under Borphukan’s command, the nimble Assamese navy outmanoeuvred the heavier Mughal ships, showcasing remarkable tactical ingenuity. Inspired by Borphukan’s vision, the government is working to unlock the potential of the Brahmaputra River to strengthen the country’s waterways and boost development in the region.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Shipping and Waterways, was attended by several dignitaries, including historian Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council. Sanyal described Borphukan as one of India’s greatest admirals, whose victory at Saraighat marked the beginning of the decline of Mughal dominance. He highlighted the need to celebrate the role of naval power in shaping India’s history and announced initiatives to recreate historic vessels from the Ahom and Maratha eras to honour the country’s maritime legacy.

The commemoration included a ceremonial programme featuring maritime cadets and the Central Band, as well as floral tributes to Lachit Borphukan. The celebration paid homage to Borphukan’s legacy as a national hero who safeguarded India’s sovereignty during his time and left an enduring influence on the nation’s maritime heritage and cultural pride.
