New Delhi: In a significant breakthrough, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has dismantled a vast international drug trafficking syndicate that spanned four continents, involving the use of cryptocurrency, encrypted messaging platforms, and anonymous shipping channels. The crackdown, which authorities are calling one of the largest against the illegal pharmaceutical trade in recent years, has resulted in eight arrests, multiple seizures, and international raids.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the achievement, calling it a “stellar example of multi-agency coordination.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shah said, “Congratulations to NCB and all agencies on busting a global drug cartel… Our agencies are constantly monitoring sophisticated modes like crypto payments and anonymous drop shippers used by these gangs. The Modi government is determined to saw off every drug cartel and protect our youth.”

The investigation was launched following a tip-off that led to the interception of a car near Delhi’s Bengali Market on May 25, 2025. The vehicle’s occupants, both B. Pharma graduates from a well-known Noida university, were found carrying 3.7 kg of Tramadol tablets - a controlled substance often misused as a narcotic. Their confessions exposed a deeper international network involved in exporting pharmaceutical drugs through an Indian B2B platform.

Subsequent raids led investigators to a stockist in Roorkee, a middleman in Delhi’s Mayur Vihar, and a key handler in Udupi, Karnataka, where a call centre was being used to manage international orders. The Udupi operation revealed 50 cross-border consignments - 29 to the US, 18 to Australia, and others to Estonia, Spain, and Switzerland.

The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), acting on NCB inputs, arrested Joel Hall, a re-shipper based in Alabama, and seized over 17,000 tablets of controlled medicines. Five additional parcels containing Zolpidem, a sedative, were also intercepted. Meanwhile, Australian authorities shut down a clandestine pill-manufacturing unit linked to the syndicate.

The syndicate used encrypted platforms like Telegram, crypto payments, and international digital wallets such as PayPal and Western Union. A UAE-based mastermind has been identified, and efforts are underway to secure his arrest with the help of Emirati authorities.

NCB has also initiated financial and cyber investigations into crypto wallets and hawala networks. Several online platforms are being engaged to take down illegal pharmacy listings advertising controlled drugs.
