Officer trainees of Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) call on the President

New Delhi: Officer trainees of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) met the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today, December 2, 2024.

Addressing the officers, the President highlighted the critical role of the Indian Revenue Service in connecting the economy through a uniform tax system and shared administrative values. She emphasised that this service plays a key role in promoting uniformity in tax administration across the country. IRS officers, she noted, serve as a vital link between the Government of India, businesses, and the tax administrations of various states.

The President observed that in the rapidly changing global socio-economic landscape, national interests are increasingly shaped by international economic cooperation. She described IRS officers as the guardians of the country's economic boundaries and underlined the significance of their honesty and dedication in their roles. She also pointed out the importance of their contributions to trade facilitation agreements with other nations.

Highlighting the broader role of the Indian Revenue Service, the President said that it enables the country to utilise resources for economic development, infrastructure building, and the execution of socio-economic schemes, including the provision of education and healthcare services. This, she said, underscores the contribution of IRS officers to nation-building. She urged them to develop transparent systems and processes that ensure accountability as part of their administrative duties.

In this dynamic era, the President called for greater use of technology to make tax collection less intrusive and more efficient. She encouraged young officers to bring new ideas and innovative solutions to the field of tax administration.

She reminded the officers that taxation is not merely a tool for generating revenue but is also vital for the social, economic, and political development of the country. The tax contributions of citizens, she explained, support national development and welfare. By working with dedication and devotion, IRS officers can make a meaningful contribution to the progress of the nation.
