New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Christmas celebrations hosted by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) at the CBCI Centre in New Delhi. This marks the first time a Prime Minister has attended such an event at the headquarters of the Catholic Church in India. Modi also interacted with key leaders from the Christian community, including cardinals, bishops, and other prominent figures of the Church.
Wishing citizens of the country and the global Christian community a Merry Christmas, the Prime Minister noted that he had recently attended Christmas celebrations at Union Minister George Kurian’s residence and expressed his honour in joining this event organised by CBCI. He congratulated CBCI on its 80th anniversary, acknowledging the milestone as a significant achievement.
The Prime Minister reflected on his past interactions with CBCI, including a Christmas celebration at his residence and visits to the Sacred Heart Cathedral during Easter. Modi recalled his recent meetings with Pope Francis during the G7 Summit in Italy and earlier interactions in the Vatican, highlighting the warmth of his connection with the Pontiff. He also spoke of his meeting with Cardinal George Koovakad, who was recently elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Francis.
Modi shared memories of India’s humanitarian efforts to rescue citizens in crisis, recalling the successful rescue of Father Alexis Prem Kumar from Afghanistan and Father Tom from Yemen. He emphasised that these were not just diplomatic missions but emotional commitments, reflecting India’s dedication to its citizens' welfare, regardless of their location.
Highlighting India’s human-centric foreign policy, the Prime Minister referred to the country’s global support during the COVID-19 pandemic, where India supplied medicines and vaccines to over 150 countries. This approach, he stated, reinforces India's commitment to prioritising both national and human interests.
The Prime Minister reiterated the teachings of Jesus Christ on love, harmony, and service, lamenting violence in society and urging unity and compassion. He emphasised the importance of hope as a guiding principle, stating that it fuels progress and prosperity. Modi cited India’s achievements over the past decade, including the rise of millions from poverty, becoming the fifth-largest global economy, and advancements in technology, infrastructure, and women’s empowerment.
He stressed that initiatives like the Nari Shakti Vandan Act and PM Awas Yojana, alongside targeted support for fishermen, farmers, and artisans, reflect the government’s commitment to inclusive development. He praised the role of socially conscious citizens in movements like Swachh Bharat and efforts to promote local artisans and sustainable practices.
The Prime Minister concluded by expressing confidence in the collective efforts towards building a developed India, urging everyone to contribute to a brighter future for the nation. He extended heartfelt wishes for Christmas and the Jubilee Year, encouraging the adoption of the values of compassion and selfless service taught by Jesus Christ.
