New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday received the prestigious Agricola Medal, the highest honour conferred by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, at the organisation’s headquarters in Rome, marking a significant global recognition of India’s growing role in food security and sustainable agriculture.

The award was presented by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu during Modi’s visit to Italy, where the Prime Minister underlined India’s commitment towards farmer welfare, climate-resilient agriculture and inclusive food systems. Accepting the honour, Modi dedicated the medal to the farmers of India, calling them the driving force behind the country’s agricultural strength and self-reliance.

The FAO, in its citation, acknowledged India’s progress in improving agricultural productivity, expanding food access and promoting sustainable farming practices under Modi’s leadership. It also highlighted flagship initiatives focused on irrigation, natural farming, digital agriculture and direct support to farmers.

The recognition assumes significance at a time when India is increasingly positioning itself as a global voice on food sustainability and climate-conscious farming. Over the past few years, India has consistently pushed for balancing agricultural growth with environmental responsibility, while also sharing best practices with developing nations.

This is only the second time an Indian Prime Minister has received the Agricola Medal. Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was earlier conferred the honour in 2008.

Officials said the award reflects international acknowledgement of India’s expanding influence in shaping conversations around global food systems, particularly amid rising concerns over climate change, supply chain disruptions and food insecurity.

Modi’s Rome visit also included bilateral discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, where both sides explored ways to deepen cooperation in trade, connectivity and strategic sectors, including the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
