Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates Phase-II of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project

Gandhinagar: The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated Phase-II of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project on September 16, 2024.

With the inauguration of the second phase, the Ahmedabad Metro Rail now has a network of 68 km across two lines — the north-south corridor and the east-west corridor — with 54 stations, including four underground stations. The first phase, inaugurated by the Prime Minister in 2022, covers a 33.5-km-long north-south corridor, with a travel time of 65 minutes and a fare of Rs 35.

Phase-II will cover a 21 km stretch between the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Motera and Gandhinagar Sector 1, with eight stations. The project, built at an estimated cost of Rs 5,384 crore, will connect key locations such as Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), GIFT City, and more.

This line includes two notable civil engineering features: an 810m long bridge over the Sabarmati River west of GIFT City and a 303m long extradosed bridge over the Narmada Canal.

Later today, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the country's first Vande Bharat Metro, renamed the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail. According to the Railway Ministry, this train will improve connectivity between Bhuj and Ahmedabad, covering 359 km in 5.45 hours.

For the public, regular service on the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail will start on September 17 from Ahmedabad, with a total journey cost of Rs 455.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the 4th Global Renewable Energy Investor's Meet and Expo (RE-INVEST) at Mahatma Mandir in Gujarat.

The Prime Minister posted on X: “Inaugurated Phase-II of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project and on the way to today’s programme with energetic youngsters.”

He also shared pictures on his X handle, showing him travelling in the metro and interacting with students. He was accompanied by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. /BI
