New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the sixth anniversary of the Jal Jeevan Mission on Thursday, highlighting its impact in providing piped drinking water to millions of households across rural India.

Launched on 15 August 2019, the scheme has so far provided tap water connections to more than 15.44 crore rural households, covering 79.74 percent of all rural homes. The mission aims to achieve universal coverage in the coming years.

“We mark #6YearsOfJalJeevanMission, a scheme that focuses on dignity and transforming lives. It has also ensured better healthcare, especially for our Nari Shakti,” Modi said in a post on X. In another post, he wrote, “A glimpse of the lasting impact of Jal Jeevan Mission across India.”

The programme has reduced the burden on women and girls who earlier had to travel long distances to fetch water. It has also improved health outcomes, boosted productivity, and created opportunities for community-led water management.

Local governance bodies have played a key role in planning and managing water resources under the scheme, which also focuses on sustainability and water conservation. The government aims to reach every rural household with safe drinking water in the next phase of the mission.
