Leh: NTPC has launched its Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, introducing hydrogen-powered buses as part of its efforts to cut carbon emissions. The project, inaugurated by the Union Power Minister, includes a hydrogen refuelling station, a solar power plant, and five fuel-cell buses designed to operate at high altitudes of 11,562 feet.
These buses, built to withstand harsh conditions, can travel up to 300 km on a single hydrogen refill. They are also capable of operating in sub-zero temperatures and in areas with low air density. The hydrogen refuelling station, which has a daily capacity of 80 kg, is powered by a 1.7 MW solar energy plant.
The initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 350 metric tons annually and produce oxygen equivalent to the impact of planting approximately 13,000 trees. The launch event saw the Minister take a 12 km ride in one of the buses, highlighting its practicality and potential in promoting clean energy solutions.
This project is part of NTPC’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy initiatives. The company plans to reach 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and is exploring hydrogen technologies across the country. The Leh project exemplifies how renewable energy and green hydrogen can address energy challenges in remote areas, supporting India’s shift towards sustainable energy systems.
NTPC’s initiative aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and encourage the use of renewable energy, particularly in regions like Ladakh, which boasts high solar energy potential and a climate ideal for green hydrogen production. The company’s efforts are expected to have a significant impact on environmental sustainability while providing practical energy solutions for difficult-to-reach areas.
