Jangaon: For workers trapped in bonded labour, knowing their rights and where to seek help can be the first step towards freedom. In Jangaon district of Telangana, the district administration is taking this message directly to workers and local communities through a mobile awareness campaign aimed at identifying victims, encouraging reporting and connecting them with support.
On Tuesday, District Collector Sandeep Kumar Jha flagged off ‘Sweekararatham’, an awareness vehicle launched as part of a statewide campaign against bonded labour. The initiative aims to spread awareness about workers’ rights and promote the toll-free Bonded Labour Helpline, 080-69434343, so that suspected cases can be reported promptly.
The vehicle will travel across the district, reaching workers engaged in agriculture, brick kilns, aquaculture, mines, quarries and other sectors. The campaign will inform them about how to identify bonded labour, understand their rights and report suspected cases through the appropriate channels.
The initiative reflects an important aspect of good governance: taking information and support closer to people who may be vulnerable to exploitation. By reaching workplaces and communities directly, the administration aims to improve awareness of available assistance and make it easier for affected workers to seek help.
Emphasising the need for swift intervention, Collector Sandeep Kumar Jha said officials must respond immediately when incidents of bonded labour come to light. He stressed that victims should receive protection, rehabilitation and the necessary assistance.
The campaign also seeks to encourage public participation in identifying suspected cases. Wider awareness of the toll-free helpline can help workers and community members report exploitation and connect affected individuals with available protection and support systems.
Posters carrying details of the helpline were also unveiled during the programme. Labour Department Officer Kumarswamy, District Medical and Health Officer Vani Sri, SCOPE NGO representative G. Manoj Kumar, other officials and staff members participated in the event.
Through ‘Sweekararatham’, the Jangaon district administration is taking a direct outreach approach to an issue that can remain hidden despite its serious consequences for workers. Sustained awareness, timely official action and effective rehabilitation will be key to ensuring that victims can access support and escape exploitation.
