New Delhi, November 30, 2022: Former Union Health Secretary and 1983 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Preeti Sudan has joined the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as its member.
According to a Personnel of Ministry statement, Sudan, a retired IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, was administered the oath by UPSC Chairman Manoj Soni at the Central Hall of the main building of the UPSC on Tuesday.
The UPSC conducts Civil Services examination annually in three stages -- preliminary, main and interview -- to select officers of Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others.
Under Article 320 of the Constitution of India, the UPSC is, inter-alia, required to be consulted on all matters relating to recruitment to civil services and posts.
The functions of the Commission under Article 320 of the Constitution are to conduct examinations for appointment to the services of the Union; direct recruitment by selection through interviews; appointment of officers on promotion, deputation and absorption.
It also frames and amends the Recruitment Rules for various services and posts under the government; deals with disciplinary cases relating to different Civil Services, and also advises the government on any matter referred to the Commission by the President of India. /BI/
