New Delhi: Indian Foreign Service officer Nidhi Tewari has been appointed as the private secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved her appointment, and the Department of Personnel and Training issued the official order on March 29.

Tewari, a 2014-batch IFS officer, has been serving as deputy secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office since January 2023. She first joined the PMO as an under secretary in November 2022. Her new role as private secretary is at Level 12 of the pay matrix and will be co-terminus with her tenure in the PMO or until further orders.

Originally from Varanasi’s Mahmoorganj area, Tewari cleared the Civil Services Examination in 2013 with an all-India rank of 96. Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, she worked as an assistant commissioner in the commercial tax department in Varanasi.

Her career in the Indian Foreign Service includes a tenure in the Ministry of External Affairs, where she was part of the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division. In the PMO, she has been closely involved in the foreign and security vertical, working under National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Tewari has now become the third officer to serve as Modi’s private secretary, following Hardik Satishchandra Shah and Vivek Kumar.
