Veteran IAS officer Amit Khare appointed Advisor to Prime Minister Modi

New Delhi: Amit Khare, a veteran IAS officer of 1985 batch, Jharkhand cadre, who retired on September 30 as Secretary, Higher Education, has been appointed Advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a period of two years.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Amit Khare, IAS (Retd.) (JH: 1985) as Advisor to the Prime Minister in Prime Minister's Office, in the rank and scale of Secretary to Government of India, on contract basis, as per other usual terms and conditions as are applicable in the case of reemployed officers of Secretary level in Government of India, initially for a period of two years of until further orders, whichever is earlier,” said an official order.

Khare is considered as a highly competent and no-nonsense professional bureaucrat. It is said that he played a seminal role in drafting the National Education Policy 2020 under the direction of Prime Minister Modi. He was also instrumental in bringing key changes in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting regarding digital media regulations.

A BSc (Physics) Graduate from St Stephen’s College, Khare holds an MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad. In late 1990s, Khare was pivotal in exposing the fodder scam in undivided Bihar when he was posted as the Deputy Commissioner of West Singhbhum, now in Jharkhand. /BI/
