Bengaluru: Titan Company Ltd has launched an ambitious afforestation initiative titled Titan Vanam, aimed at transforming degraded land into a thriving forest ecosystem in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district. The project, inaugurated in Thorapalli, near Hosur, has already planted over 208,000 saplings across 45 acres and is poised to become one of India’s largest high-density polyculture reforestation efforts.
Initiated in December 2024, Titan Vanam is being executed in partnership with Medius Earth and Biotasoil Foundation. The project spans two key sites—Thorapalli (33 acres) and Billanakuppam (12.5 acres)—and incorporates advanced ecological techniques, including organic soil amendments, beneficial microbes, invasive species management, and bio-fencing to foster native biodiversity.
With over 120 native species planted and sapling density exceeding 4,000 per acre, the forest is projected to sequester approximately 800 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually over the next 20 years. In addition to its climate goals, the project aims to improve groundwater recharge, reduce soil erosion, enhance air quality, and restore the region’s historic elephant corridor.
At the formal launch, Titan MD C.K. Venkataraman emphasized that Vanam is not merely a plantation effort but “a living blueprint for how industry can drive large‑scale ecosystem restoration.” The launch event featured sapling planting ceremonies, a technical briefing on afforestation techniques, and the unveiling of Titan Vanam’s species inventory.
Chief Sustainability Officer N.E. Sridhar underlined the company’s long-term commitment, noting that Titan will maintain the forest for at least three years, monitoring biodiversity growth and fine-tuning the ecosystem with endangered and protected species such as Acacia catechu, Tricalysia sphaerocarpa, and Gloriosa superba—Tamil Nadu’s state flower.
Krishnagiri District Collector Dinesh Kumar praised the initiative as a model for public-private partnerships, stating, “This plantation of over 2 lakh trees is a shining example of what meaningful collaboration can accomplish.”
With plans to scale the model across other regions, Titan Vanam underscores the growing role of corporate India in addressing climate change and environmental degradation through science-based, community-integrated restoration.
