Pune: Habitat for Humanity India, a leading housing non-profit organization in partnership with LG Electronics, successfully completed the ‘Life’s Good: Hope Village’ project in Dehane and Kharoshi villages located in Khed block of Pune district, Maharashtra. Through this project, Habitat India aimed at holistic development of the villages by building healthy homes, sanitation units for families and schools and access to solar energy.
The first phase of the project was completed in September 2021 in Kharoshi village with the construction of 12 new homes equipped with sanitation units and solar home lighting systems; 15 individual household latrines; installation of solar street lights in 6 locations; and infrastructure development of Kharoshi’s Zilla Parishad School.
In the second phase of the project, which was implemented between October 2021 and September 2022 in Dehane village, five new homes equipped with sanitation units, bathrooms and solar lighting systems have been handed over to 5 low-income families. Additionally, a 260-square-feet sanitation complex was handed over to the DehaneZillaParishad School which will benefit 101 students as well as the teachers.
Commenting on the partnership, Dr Rajan Samuel, Managing Director, Habitat for Humanity India, said, “Because of Covid-19, everyone has been forced to consider the importance of a healthy home. For the last 39 years, Habitat for Humanity India has been bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. We are grateful to have a partner in LG whose support has enabled us to help the families achieve strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.”
Commenting on his experience, Santosh Khade, one of the five home owners from Dehane village, said: “My wife Sarika and I work on our small farm. I also work as an agricultural labourer to earn a living. To live in a concrete home is a dream come true for us. I thank Habitat for Humanity India and LG Electronics for this home. It will serve as a foundation for our better future.”
The ‘Life’s Good: Hope Village’ project has empowered the community in Khed through holistic development interventions in the housing eco-system. Habitat for Humanity India believes in building healthy housing ecosystems which support safe, decent homes with better sanitation, ease of access to water and better community facilities to build a healthier India. /BI/
