New Delhi: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) continues its steadfast commitment to safeguarding global cultural heritage by successfully intercepting and seizing an import consignment containing vintage articles, antiques, and historical artefacts with an estimated market value exceeding Rs. 26.8 crore, according to a release.
Acting on specific intelligence, the DRI identified an import container originating from Jebel Ali, UAE. This container had been declared to Customs as "Unaccompanied Baggage for Personal Effects," prompting a thorough examination.
During the examination, the container was revealed to house a treasure trove of old statues, vintage utensils, valuable paintings, antique furniture, and other significant heritage items. Astonishingly, some of these artefacts date back to the 19th century and are crafted from precious stones, gold, silver, or adorned with gold and silver coatings. The majority of the seized objects originate from European countries, notably the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The consignment's declared value appeared significantly undervalued, likely in an attempt to evade Customs Duty.
It is noteworthy that such items often command substantial demand in illicit markets. The investigation into this case is currently in progress, informed an official.
"The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence remains resolute in its mission to protect and preserve our shared cultural heritage from exploitation and illicit trade. This seizure serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilant enforcement in safeguarding our priceless cultural assets," added an officer. /BI/
