New Delhi: India has officially assumed the hosting responsibilities for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the ceremonial handover taking place at the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Sunday. The event marked the formal transition of the Games to Ahmedabad, which will host the historic centenary edition in 2030. 

The Commonwealth Games flag and the ceremonial baton were handed over to Indian representatives, including Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, symbolising India’s official acceptance as the next host nation. The ceremony concluded with a vibrant cultural presentation showcasing India’s heritage and offering the world its first glimpse of Ahmedabad 2030. 

The 23rd Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026, bringing together nearly 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories across a streamlined programme of sports. Glasgow stepped in as the host after Australia’s Victoria withdrew due to escalating costs, ensuring the continuity of the Games. 

Ahmedabad was officially awarded the 2030 Commonwealth Games by Commonwealth Sport during its General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26, 2025, following a unanimous endorsement of India’s bid. The 2030 edition will be particularly significant as it marks 100 years of the Commonwealth Games and will be India’s second time hosting the event, after New Delhi successfully staged the Games in 2010. 

With the ceremonial handover complete, preparations for Ahmedabad 2030 formally begin, positioning India to once again welcome the Commonwealth sporting community on home soil.
