New Delhi: The 22nd Divya Kala Mela, a vibrant celebration of creativity and empowerment, is transforming the iconic India Gate in New Delhi into a hub of culture and inclusion. Organised by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the Mela is taking place from 12 to 22 December 2024, showcasing the extraordinary talent of 100 Divyang artisans, artists, and entrepreneurs from 20 states and Union Territories.
 

A part of the ‘Vocal for Local’ movement, this 11-day event highlights not only the rich cultural diversity of India but also the entrepreneurial spirit of its participants. From handicrafts and eco-friendly products to home decor and organic foods, the Mela offers a stunning array of items, all crafted with remarkable skill and determination. Visitors can also experience the energy of captivating cultural performances, with the grand finale, ‘Divya Kala Shakti’, taking centre stage on 22 December under the theme "Ability in Disability".
 

Behind these products and performances are inspiring stories of resilience and creativity. Among them is the journey of Harish and Priya, a couple from Kerala whose love for traditional culinary practices led them to build a thriving business offering authentic banana and jackfruit chips. In Delhi, Hinali, a Divyang entrepreneur associated with IDEA, has turned her passion for hand-woven garments into a flourishing venture, bringing her artistry to a wider audience. Meanwhile, Arav Mahajan, an artist with Down Syndrome, has redefined creativity through his custom hand-painted shoes and accessories. His live painting sessions at the Mela have captivated visitors, breaking stereotypes and inspiring others to embrace their passions.
 

The Mela is not just a marketplace; it is a movement for empowerment. With a dedicated space for food stalls offering regional delicacies, the event promises to be a feast for all the senses. Since its inception in 2022, the Divya Kala Mela has travelled to 21 cities, including Mumbai, Bhopal, and Bengaluru, providing a national platform for Divyang artisans to gain visibility, market access, and new opportunities.
 

This Delhi edition of the Mela is a testament to the power of inclusion and the boundless potential of the human spirit. From the colourful stalls to the lively performances, the event celebrates the extraordinary journeys of its participants while inviting visitors to experience the beauty of art, culture, and community.
