Delhi police to deploy face-recognition goggles on Republic Day

Face-recognition goggles to debut at Republic Day, Delhi Police links 65,000 criminal records to smart eyewear

New Delhi: Ahead of Republic Day, Delhi Police has taken a major technological step to tighten security by introducing smart face-recognition goggles that can instantly identify suspected terrorists and criminals. The black goggles, which look ordinary at first glance, are equipped with advanced facial recognition technology designed to flag suspects in real time.

The key strength of the device lies in its extensive database. The goggles are connected to a mobile phone that carries records of around 65,000 terrorists and criminals. As soon as a person comes into view, the camera embedded in the goggles scans the face and cross-checks it with the database. If a match is found, the connected mobile screen displays an alert with a red frame, notifying the police officer immediately.

According to Delhi Police officials, the system works in real time. Once a suspect is identified, the alert allows police personnel to act on the spot without delay. This is expected to speed up arrests and make surveillance more effective, especially in crowded areas where offenders often try to blend in.

The high-tech goggles will be deployed publicly for the first time during the Republic Day celebrations. Police personnel stationed along Kartavya Path and nearby areas will be seen wearing the smart eyewear as part of enhanced security arrangements. With potential threats in mind, security agencies have placed strong emphasis on using technology this year.

Delhi Police has said the goggles are completely indigenous. Developed in collaboration with a private company, the device took nearly a year to design and test. Special attention has been given to technology, design and data security to ensure smooth use during field operations.

Ahead of Republic Day, the goggles were also tested during trials across Delhi. On Wednesday, several police officers were seen wearing them while patrolling the streets. Officials said the technology performed effectively during trials, boosting confidence in its deployment.

For criminals who have managed to stay off the radar, the new system could prove to be a serious challenge. Hiding in crowds may no longer be easy, as a single glance through the goggles can reveal their identity. Authorities believe this will strengthen overall security and increase public confidence.

The introduction of these smart goggles signals a shift towards technology-driven policing. Delhi Police sees this as a step towards tightening control over crime and terrorism through advanced tools. In the future, such smart devices could serve as a model for police forces across the country.
