New Delhi: India Post has launched Gyan Post, a new national service aimed at delivering educational books and printed study material at concessional rates through the country’s vast postal network. The service became operational on May 1.
Designed to reduce the financial and logistical barriers to education, Gyan Post is modelled on the earlier Book Post system but comes with added features such as real-time tracking. It enables the affordable dispatch of textbooks and printed materials prescribed in the syllabus for both regular and distance education courses. Magazines and general periodicals, however, are excluded from the scheme.
The service is available for parcels up to 5 kilograms, with prices ranging from ₹20 to ₹100 depending on the weight. While smaller parcels may be slightly costlier than under Book Post, larger shipments, like 5 kg packages, are considerably cheaper under the new system.
Unlike many commercial offerings, Gyan Post is not aimed at generating revenue. The focus is on enhancing access to educational content, particularly in remote and rural areas where availability and cost of study material often act as barriers to learning.
