India, Japan widen science partnership with quantum and healthcare pacts

New Delhi: India and Japan have expanded their bilateral science and technology partnership with fresh agreements in quantum research and healthcare innovation, signalling a broader push for joint work in advanced technologies and medical science.

The agreements were exchanged during a bilateral meeting in New Delhi in the presence of Jitendra Singh and Kimi Onoda, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.

One of the key agreements is a Memorandum of Cooperation focused on health and medical devices. The pact brings together Japan’s Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development, India’s Department of Science and Technology and Indian Council of Medical Research to strengthen joint research and support innovation in healthcare technologies.

The collaboration is expected to focus on medical research, device development and technology-driven healthcare solutions, with both sides aiming to build stronger institutional partnerships.

Alongside this, the two countries also signed a Letter of Intent on cooperation in quantum science and technology between Japan’s Cabinet Office and India’s Department of Science and Technology. The understanding is set to deepen engagement in areas such as quantum computing, communication systems, sensing technologies and materials research.

The latest agreements add to the growing science and technology engagement between the two countries, as both governments continue to look at strategic sectors for collaboration.

Speaking at the meeting, Singh said the two countries shared a “natural synergy in science and technology,” adding that Japan’s technological capabilities combined with India’s talent base created opportunities for deeper innovation partnerships.

He said bilateral cooperation had entered a “new phase” following Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan in 2025.

The latest pacts are expected to strengthen India-Japan cooperation in high-impact sectors and support long-term collaboration in research-led innovation.
