New Delhi: As India marks World Environment Day on June 5, one of the country's largest dairy brands has taken a step that could significantly reduce everyday plastic waste generated by households.
Mother Dairy has launched what it says is India's first naturally degradable milk pouch, beginning with its cow milk variant in Delhi-NCR. The move comes amid growing efforts by the government and industry to promote sustainable consumption and reduce the environmental burden of plastic waste.
The development is significant considering the scale at which milk is consumed in India. Millions of milk pouches are used and discarded daily across the country, making dairy packaging a major contributor to post-consumer plastic waste. While recycling systems exist, a large quantity of discarded plastic continues to find its way into landfills, water bodies and open spaces.
According to Mother Dairy, the newly introduced packaging has been developed after years of research and is designed to naturally break down in the environment over time without leaving behind harmful microplastics. The company has stated that consumers will not have to pay any additional cost for the new packaging.
The initiative aligns with the broader national focus on environmental sustainability. In recent years, the government has stepped up measures to address plastic pollution through restrictions on identified single-use plastic items, promotion of waste management practices, support for circular economy models and campaigns encouraging environmentally responsible lifestyles.
Experts note that while large-scale renewable energy projects and conservation programmes often dominate discussions on sustainability, innovations in everyday consumer products can have an equally important impact. Packaging used for essential commodities such as milk reaches millions of households daily, offering an opportunity to reduce waste generation at scale.
With India pursuing ambitious climate and environmental goals, the introduction of degradable packaging in a high-volume product category highlights how sustainability is increasingly becoming part of routine consumer choices. As World Environment Day draws attention to the need for collective action, initiatives such as these demonstrate how businesses can complement public policy efforts in addressing one of the country's most pressing environmental challenges—plastic waste.
