The Kunj opens in Delhi as India’s first flagship craft and cultural hub

New Delhi: Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh inaugurated The Kunj, a flagship retail and cultural destination dedicated to Indian handicrafts and handlooms, at Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. Conceived and developed by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), the initiative is designed to empower artisans, expand market access, and reimagine the craft sector through a design-led and experiential approach.

Speaking at the launch, Giriraj Singh said, “The Kunj is India’s first such initiative dedicated to promoting crafts at this large scale and in lines with the vision of Central Govt to take artisans ‘from gaon to global.’” He added that the project is expected to become a model for similar initiatives nationwide, reinforcing India’s place as a global hub for traditional knowledge systems and handmade excellence.

The Kunj complex features curated retail shops, a live craft demonstration zone, interactive workshop spaces, culinary experiences, and an immersive exhibition spread across two floors. As part of its three-month inaugural celebration, visitors will be able to experience live demonstrations, artisan-led workshops, and curated cultural programming.

During his walkthrough, the minister engaged with artisans, brand founders, and curators, noting the range and depth of craftsmanship on display. He commended the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) and its teams for integrating cultural heritage with modern retail opportunities and for creating a space that redefines public interaction with India’s handmade traditions.

Alongside the launch of The Kunj, Giriraj Singh also inaugurated the newly constructed Shilp Bhawan, the headquarters of the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts).
