New Delhi: In a tribute to Bharat Ratna and musical legend Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his birth centenary, the Union Finance Ministry has announced the issuance of a special Rs100 commemorative silver coin. The official gazette notification, released on August 26, has made the moment truly historic for the people of Assam and admirers of the "Sudhakantha" across the globe.

The coin, symbolising the timeless legacy of Hazarika, will be circular in shape with a diameter of 44 millimetres and 200 serrations along its edge. Weighing 40 grams, it will be crafted from 99.9 percent pure silver, ensuring that the memory of the maestro from the banks of the Luit finds a place in India’s cultural and numismatic history.

Assam Chief Minister expressed his gratitude on X, terming the coin “a timeless recognition for Dr Bhupen Hazarika.” He wrote, “Glad to share the Ministry of Finance has issued the official gazette notification for issuance of a Rs 100 commemorative coin on the special occasion of the birth centenary of the Bharat Ratna. Gratitude to Adarniya Shri @narendramodi ji for always giving Sudhakantha the due recognition he deserves and making his centenary celebrations even special.”

Officials said the gesture by the Central Government has elevated the centenary celebrations, ensuring that Hazarika’s unmatched contribution to Indian music, cinema, and culture receives enduring recognition.
