New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, has approved India's decision to sign the Letter of Intent, enabling the country to join the International Energy Efficiency Hub. This marks a significant step in India's commitment to promoting energy efficiency and sustainable development.
By becoming a member of the Energy Efficiency Hub, India will collaborate with a global platform dedicated to advancing energy efficiency. The Hub was established in 2020 as the successor to the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC), of which India was previously a member. The Hub brings together governments, international organisations, and private sector entities to share knowledge, strategies, and innovative solutions in energy efficiency. As of July 2024, sixteen countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, have joined the initiative.
India’s participation will offer access to a wealth of global expertise, resources, and collaborative opportunities with member nations, allowing the country to enhance its domestic energy efficiency programmes. India will also share its own knowledge and experience with other members, while learning from international best practices. This move aligns with India's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy-efficient technologies.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory agency, has been designated to represent India in the Hub. BEE will facilitate the country’s participation in the Hub’s activities and ensure that India’s efforts are aligned with its national energy efficiency goals.
Joining the Hub will help India accelerate its transition towards a low-carbon economy and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change. India's involvement in this initiative is expected to boost energy security and drive long-term sustainability in its energy sector.
