C.P. Radhakrishnan elected as Vice-President of India

New Delhi: C.P. Radhakrishnan, Governor of Maharashtra, has been elected as the 17th Vice-President of India. He won the election on Tuesday (September 9, 2025) by a margin of 152 votes. He succeeds Jagdeep Dhankhar, who resigned from the post in July due to health reasons.

 

Radhakrishnan, born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, has held several key roles in public life. He served as Governor of Jharkhand and also held additional charge of Telangana and Puducherry. Between 2016 and 2020, he chaired the Coir Board under the Ministry of MSME, during which coir exports touched record levels. In July 2024, he assumed the role of Governor of Maharashtra.

 

A graduate in Business Administration, Radhakrishnan is also known for his sporting interests, particularly in table tennis, cricket and volleyball. He has represented India in multiple international delegations across Asia, Europe and North America. While Radhakrishnan is the 15th individual to hold the office, he is counted as the 17th Vice President in terms of the position.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan on his victory. “Congratulations to Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji on winning the 2025 Vice-Presidential election. His life has always been devoted to serving society and empowering the poor and marginalised. I am confident that he will be an outstanding VP, who will strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse,” he wrote on X.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended his wishes. “Congratulations to CP Radhakrishnan Ji on being elected as the Vice-President of India. I firmly believe that your sagacity as a leader who has risen from the grassroots of society and profound knowledge about administration will help us in bringing out the best in our parliamentary democracy to serve the marginalised,” he posted.
