Government secures ₹1.56 crore refunds for students denied claims by coaching centres

New Delhi: The government has secured refunds worth ₹1.56 crore for over 600 students and aspirants who were denied refunds by coaching centres despite meeting the terms and conditions. These students, enrolled in courses for civil services, engineering, and other programmes, filed grievances through the National Consumer Helpline (NCH), which facilitated the resolution. The Department of Consumer Affairs has now directed all coaching centres to adopt clear and transparent refund policies to prevent unfair practices. Many students had faced financial losses due to cancelled courses, delayed classes, or misleading promises. The NCH played a key role in resolving disputes quickly, preventing lengthy legal battles.

Students have shared their experiences, highlighting how NCH helped them reclaim their fees. A hostel resident in Chennai received a refund after reporting poor services. A psychology workshop enrollee in Rajkot was refunded after being denied a seat despite payment. A JEE aspirant in Jamshedpur successfully reclaimed fees after an institute refused to acknowledge payment. A GATE course student in Kota received a refund in four days after the institute failed to process it within the promised period. A parent in Korba secured a refund for an unsatisfactory course after a 14-day observation period. A civil services aspirant in Aurangabad was refunded after withdrawing due to personal reasons.

The Department of Consumer Affairs continues to strengthen the grievance redressal mechanism, ensuring students have access to a fair and transparent system. It urges all students facing similar issues to use the National Consumer Helpline for quick resolution and calls on coaching institutes to comply with consumer protection norms.
