Indian Police Service probationers call on the President

New Delhi: A group of Indian Police Service probationers of the 76 RR (2023 batch) met the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today, 30th September 2024.

In her address to the probationers, the President highlighted the critical importance of the Indian Police Service among the All-India Services. She emphasised that law and order form the foundation of governance and are essential to the modern state. In many places, IPS officers will be the face of the state and the first point of contact for citizens with the state’s administrative machinery.

The President noted that as India aims to reach new heights in the coming years, the role of IPS officers becomes even more crucial. Economic growth and social development can only occur when the rule of law is upheld. Without law and order, ensuring justice and protecting citizens' rights, progress becomes an empty concept.

She expressed her happiness at the sharp increase in the number of women IPS officers in recent years, believing that their growing presence will improve police-community relations and benefit the nation.

The President also acknowledged that while policing has benefitted from technological advances, criminals and terrorists have similarly adopted technology. With rising cybercrimes and cyber warfare, IPS officers will be expected to be tech-savvy and stay ahead of criminals.

Finally, the President addressed the stresses of the responsibilities placed on IPS officers and advised them not to ignore their mental well-being. She encouraged them to incorporate yoga, pranayama, and relaxation techniques into their routines. She reminded them that the ‘S’ in IPS stands for service and emphasised that their primary goal is to serve the nation and its citizens.
